SunPower Solar System Limited Warranty

Attention SunPower system owners! With SunPower’s recent bankruptcy announcement, it’s crucial to protect your investment. To ensure that the panel equipment warranty on your SunPower solar panels remains active, you must register your system with Maxeon, the company now responsible for supporting the equipment warranty. This simple step guarantees that your  warranty will be honored moving forward. Don’t wait — the deadline to register is December 31, 2024. Visit the Maxeon limited warranty registration page and register your system before it’s too late!  The registration link is here.
Following SunPower’s bankruptcy, it’s essential to register your system to ensure Maxeon, the original manufacturer of SunPower panels. Maxeon requires that all SunPower systems be registered by December 31, 2024, to maintain warranty coverage.
To complete your registration, you’ll need to provide the installer name and the approximate date of installation. While not mandatory, Maxeon also recommends including the product type or model number of your solar panels. Register your system today to secure your warranty protection. You can access the Maxeon warranty registration page here.

Frequently Asked Questions

    Q: What brought this on?

A: On August 5, 2024, SunPower Corporation filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. SunPower cited a number of reasons for financial insolvency: a “severe liquidity crisis” caused by high debt levels exceeding $2 billion, rising inflation and interest rates, and delays in filing financial statements due to errors in previous reports.  The bankruptcy process has not concluded, but our best guess is that the company will cease some or all operations. This has implications for equipment warranties and monitoring.

Q: What does this mean for my manufacturer’s warranties for my solar system?

A: Maxeon has agreed to honor a limited warranty (document attached) on the solar panels that they manufactured. The warranties of the other components of legacy solar systems, such as inverters, microinverters, and monitoring equipment, are, for the most part, being honored by the original equipment manufacturer and do not require registration as far as we know.  Please see the SunPower Warranty Information here for more information on those components.

Q: What about Independent Power’s Workmanship Warranty?

A: We stand firmly behind our workmanship warranty included with the installation of your solar system.

Q: Will my solar panels continue to work?

A: Yes, your SunPower panels (most likely produced by Maxeon) should continue to operate as usual and generate electricity.  We strongly believe that SunPower’s demise was not a product issue, but financial mismanagement. SunPower (and now Maxeon) produced and continues to produce some of the most efficient premium solar panels on the market, and we expect those products to continue to perform.  We have attached Maxeon’s FAQ and Limited Warranty documents to this email.

Q: Will Maxeon take over the “Complete Confidence Warranty”?

A: Maxeon is only providing a warranty for the residential panels it produced but not all components of the system. Enphase manufactured the majority of the micro-inverters for SunPower over the last 5-10 years and has indicated that it will honor the equipment warranty on those products.

Q: How can I tell if my SunPower solar panels were produced by Maxeon?

A: The vast majority of solar panels sold by SunPower were produced by Maxeon, including E-Series, X-Series, A-Series, and M-Series solar panels.

Q: What about my leased or PPA SunPower system?

A: Please contact your leasing company directly. Refer to the customer service number on your billing statement.

Q: Will my system’s monitoring continue to work?

A: It’s not clear whether monitoring services provided by SunPower will be maintained. There could be disruptions to your monitoring data and system.

Q: What does this mean for Independent Power?

A: Independent Power continues to be locally owned and operated as an independent champion of electrification, which includes the installation of solar, batteries, heat pumps, and electrical upgrades. Our business is healthy and growing. However, we understand that this situation may cause concern, and we’re here to support you through this transition. If you have any questions or need assistance, please respond to this email (warranties@solarips.com), and we will do our very best to respond within 24 hours.
